Ongoing Strike and Tensions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

The shuttered businesses and halted transportation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir persist for the fourth consecutive day, disrupting daily routines in the region. With markets closed, public transport suspended, and government offices along with schools shut down, residents face significant disruptions to their daily lives.

Adding to the challenges, the suspension of internet services exacerbates communication difficulties for the local populace. Participants of the march from various areas are converging at Dhirkot before proceeding towards Muzaffarabad, as reported by a leader of the joint action committee.

In response to the situation, a contingent of Rangers has been deployed in Muzaffarabad to manage any potential emergencies. Their convoy faced resistance from protesters who pelted stones at them in Shoran, prompting the police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Angry demonstrators have blocked Abbottabad Road at several points, diverting Rangers’ vehicles back towards Bararkot following the unrest. Amidst this, the Awami Joint Action Committee has resumed negotiations with the government over their demands, with contacts restored via phone discussions.

Meanwhile, protest leaders previously arrested in Bhimbar have been released, including Tahir Iqbal, the action committee leader in Samahni. However, internet services remain suspended in Bhimbar, causing communication challenges for residents.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is convening a special meeting to address the ongoing situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with key stakeholders, including AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq and other officials, in attendance. The meeting aims to provide a detailed briefing on the situation and explore potential solutions.

The ongoing strike underscores the simmering tensions in the region, exemplified by the long march from Rawalakot towards Muzaffarabad initiated by leaders of the Awami Joint Action Committee. Despite police deployment to deter the march, the situation in Muzaffarabad remains relatively calm on Monday. However, with markets closed, educational institutions shuttered, and internet services suspended, the impact of the strike persists across the region.
